This year as Abbie entered into the 7th grade the desire for more independence came and as parents we recognized the opportunity to help Abbie with the process of growing. One thing she longed to do was ride her bike to school. So we fixed her bike, bought new tires, a chain and lock as well as a helmet. Even taking trips to the school to help her become familiar with her surroundings. She has made several successful journeys to school and back home. A few days ago it was raining so I took the chance to drive her in to school. As I did I reminded her to pay close attention to her location, to the street signs, and to remember that she can always reverse her way back out of a location if she gets lost if she pays attention to the details. She told me there was nothing to worry about. Well this morning Abbie lost her way riding her bike to school. In a complete state of overwhelming fear she called me. Nothing seemed familiar. In that moment fear caused her to forget what she was taught. That fear kept her from being confident in what she knew. She couldn’t remember what hand was left and right or that the sun raised in the eastern sky. All of these things were necessary for her to be directed correctly. Once she began to listen and move in the direction I described to her she regained her sense of location and made it to her destination.
It made me think this morning, how many times do we not heed a warning and end up lost, without direction fearful and without confidence in our abilities or the directions we have been given? We need to remember that in those moments we need to stop, shut out everything that is building our fear and focus on the one who loves us who will see us through. We need to trust even when everything looks unfamiliar or even wrong and in faith move through the circumstance. We have been prepared, equipped, and God has full faith in our abilities to get where He has sent us… He knows HE never fails!
